[Oct 28, 12:01 PM] Skye H: hello
[Oct 28, 12:02 PM] Skye H: When taking photos for your blog, should you be thinking this would be good in a cookbook when you get to that point or are they different types and by cookbook I mean anything from a download on your blog all the way to a printed one.
[Oct 28, 12:03 PM] Lisa Kerhin: Hello!
[Oct 28, 12:06 PM] LoriRice: Hello, everyone! I'd love to know where you are watching from. I'm in Central CA!
[Oct 28, 12:06 PM] TheRedheadBaker: Just outside of Philadelphia
[Oct 28, 12:06 PM] Jason Logsdon: Hi Lori! Rainy day in Brooklyn
[Oct 28, 12:06 PM] graceandvine: I'd normally say sunny AZ but it's COLD here. Just broke out the fuzzy socks 😂
[Oct 28, 12:06 PM] Kara Myers: San Antonio, TX here 🙂
[Oct 28, 12:06 PM] Lisa Kerhin: From Georgia here
[Oct 28, 12:08 PM] LoriRice: @Skye H The same photos can work for a book as long as they are not shot too tightly and they are high enough resolution for print based on what your publisher or designer needs.
[Oct 28, 12:08 PM] Amy Shen: Hi from Seattle!
[Oct 28, 12:09 PM] Meggan Leal: Hellooooo! Sorry I’m a few minutes late!
[Oct 28, 12:10 PM] Skye H: @lori, thanks good to know.
[Oct 28, 12:11 PM] LoriRice: Feel free to drop in any questions you have during the session. I'm happy to answer them.
[Oct 28, 12:12 PM] Skye H: I'm am the type that prefers to work smarter not harder. My hubby doesn't seem to grasp that
[Oct 28, 12:14 PM] Siri: Not going to plan any cook book but watching for you Lori as I love the email content you send us every week:)
[Oct 28, 12:14 PM] LoriRice: @Siri That's so nice to hear! Thanks for letting me know!
[Oct 28, 12:15 PM] Lisa Kerhin: Planning a cookbook down the road...so this is all info in the bank
[Oct 28, 12:16 PM] Meggan Leal: I'm only five minutes in and my mind is already blown. Lol. I had no idea that the brightness would need to be different for a book, or even considered the texture of the physical pages.
[Oct 28, 12:16 PM] LoriRice: @Lisa Excellent. It is so helpful to know these kinds of things in advance. You'll be prepared for an enjoyable and productive experience when you accomplish the goal!
[Oct 28, 12:17 PM] LoriRice: @Meggan So glad you are finding it helpful!
[Oct 28, 12:22 PM] Skye H: is there a way to expand the chat roll box?
[Oct 28, 12:23 PM] Jessica Montanelli: Skye click the popout button on the bottom right and there you can expand it
[Oct 28, 12:25 PM] Skye H: thanks I was hoping it wouldn't be a separate window
[Oct 28, 12:27 PM] Gitta Grether-Sweeney: Thanks Lori. Even though I am not at this level, it was very interesting to hear all it takes to photographing a cookbook. I really enjoyed your presentation! ThxI
[Oct 28, 12:28 PM] Shanna_S: Mirrorless cameras are fine for food/cookbook photography too such as the Nikon z 6 and 7 as well as the Sony A7s.
[Oct 28, 12:31 PM] LoriRice: @Gitta That's great to hear! I'm so glad!
[Oct 28, 12:32 PM] LoriRice: @Shanna Yes, they are. It all has to do with the max resolution, pixels and camera sensor. This translates to the max size of quality print.
[Oct 28, 12:33 PM] Meggan Leal: I'm working with an iPhone11 Pro. I've had a couple of my photos published in magazines and they seem great - do you think that means they would work for a cookbook as well?
[Oct 28, 12:33 PM] Shanna_S: And many mirrorless cameras are better than DSLRs in that area now. I shoot with both and if you put the images side by side at full rez most people wouldn't be able to tell which came from which camera.
[Oct 28, 12:37 PM] LoriRice: @Meggan No, I wouldn't risk using even a higher-end phone for a cookbook. There may have been some things done on the backend in publishing to make your phone photo useable for print. One big reason is that you don't have a RAW copy of your photo if your publisher needs to make a change. You can always inquire with your publisher or designer if the photos you have are usable, but I'd never go into a project expecting to use a phone.
[Oct 28, 12:37 PM] LoriRice: @Meggan Most publishers won't hire you to be the photographer of your book if you use a phone.
[Oct 28, 12:39 PM] LoriRice: @Shanna It all depends on the model. While they look the same, the internal data is not always the same and print translation is different than digital. There are definitely mirrorless models that work, though. I go into those details in my course.
[Oct 28, 12:42 PM] Skye H: @shanna_S any recommendations on a camera?
[Oct 28, 12:44 PM] Shanna_S: a good friend of mine ditched all of his Canon gear for Sony, Fuji and Lumix. His prints from all of his mirrorless are better than anything I've ever seen. Sharpness, clarity, resolution etc. I just cringe at the dslr is the only way when there are so many mirrorless that are just as good if not better and they are cheaper and more lighter than bulky dslrs. That's all.
[Oct 28, 12:47 PM] LoriRice: @Skye That's a question that all depends on budget, skill and comfort level. The lens you use can also improve or decrease the quality of your images. I use a Canon 5D Mark IV, but less expensive models will shoot perfectly good print images. Mirrorless cameras as well. My Sony a6300 could produce print images as well.
[Oct 28, 12:48 PM] LoriRice: @Shanna That's great. Every photographer has their favorite. I love having my Sony a6300 for travel.
[Oct 28, 12:48 PM] Skye H: Thanks @lori my camera died last year and I need to save up for a new one. It was weird the software just blanked out. Do wish there was a way to rebuild it
[Oct 28, 12:50 PM] LoriRice: @Skye If it was a DSLR those shutters do have a life. Well, all cameras do really. My suggestion would be to decide on a budget you are comfortable that will include the body and lens. Then dig into understanding the capabilities of a camera that fits that price point.
[Oct 28, 12:51 PM] Skye H: @lori what is the typical life? One day it said software update required and wouldn't do anything else.
[Oct 28, 12:53 PM] LoriRice: I'll be hopping over to the Summit Facebook group for a live Q&A in 10 minutes! Join me there. If you'd like to grab my emails that Siri mentioned enjoying so much :) head to http://www.loririce.com. You'll also find the free audio download Expert and Industry Tips for Photographing your Own Cookbook there.
[Oct 28, 12:53 PM] Skye H: @lori it was a 2.5 year old camera
[Oct 28, 12:54 PM] LoriRice: @Skye I only know some info for DSLRs. Mid range models have a shutter life about 100,000 to 150,000. The more expensive the model, the longer the life. I'm not sure about software updates.
[Oct 28, 12:55 PM] LoriRice: And of course, if you are interested in checking out Cookbook Photo Academy, click the link at the bottom of the presentation screen. Madison will be announcing a giveaway soon - Free enrollment to one lucky winner!
[Oct 28, 12:57 PM] Skye H: @lori thanks yeah the manufacture didn't seem to know about the software update message either. They felt it didn't need it
[Oct 28, 12:57 PM] LoriRice: @Skye Oh that's so frustrating when you can get the help you need.
[Oct 28, 2:08 PM] Natalia Ilina: Thank you!
[Oct 28, 3:23 PM] Nina T: @Meggan you can shoot and download raws, but you have to use a different app - not the standard iOS Camera app.
[Oct 28, 3:24 PM] Nina T: *on the iPhone
